iusethis now powered by Sun.

In the last few months, iusethis has been growing steadily, which we think is great. Unfortunately, this also means that the load on our servers has been growing steadily as well. In the last weeks, our server has started to become starved for resources, and we've even had a couple of crashes when Appfresh announced their Leopard compability release.

Fortunately, macs are popular workstations among the very cool people at Sun, and iusethis is a popular resource at Sun Norway. They have kindly donated a Sun Fire T1000 which will let us run smoothly for the near future.

This means that we're happily running under Solaris. Getting Catalyst up and running was a breeze, a testament to how well Sun has modernized their operating system in recent versions. Sun's new Cool Stack already contained most of the things we needed to get up and running.

In other news, our Facebook app is now also running under Solaris on one of Joyent's Facebook Accelerators (Free for the first year), probably the first Perl app to run there (They support Java, Ruby, Python and PHP out of the box, but not Perl). It's running under FastCGI, and getting it installed was a mere matter of installing the Catalyst modules (no problems whatsoever, just cpan Task::Catalyst, and config the apache web server to let the root of the virtual server be handled by the fastcgi script I didn't bother using their web console management, as I'm more comfortable on the command line.

Wow, this is great news! Thanks to Sun Norway from the AppFresh guys!

just to notify you people, there seems to be a consistent problem (for almost all members of iusethis) in regard to uploading icons and screenshots for applications. they are never accepted, in either jpeg or png formats, regardless of whether the images meet the size specification or not. the response from the website when attempting to upload an icon or screenshot for an app, for the past three days has been; “could not read icon. image discarded.” & “could not read screenshot. image discarded.” just thought i would mention this.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, our image library was compiled on the new machine without jpeg or png support. Fixed now. Sorry for the inconvenience

I do believe openid login is bust as well ;)

Good to hear it’s fixed and things are back to normal. Those 503 errors were a bummer!

Also, you need to add OpenID to this blog!

We have temporarily disabled openid because the Wordpress OpenID plugin had some requirements from the theme that our skin did not fulfill. We plan to migrate to Moveabletype before christmas, which has much better OpenID support.

Sounds really great! Your site is awfuel. You guys are an inspiring example with great ideas!

uploading icons works at the moment and sorry to be a nag again, but uploading screenshots, at-least in png format, still does not seem to work at all.
