Nordaaker is the company where Arne and Marcus collect all their activities. The name originates from Arne's grandparents' place, close to where Marcus grew up. This blog will contain information related to our web apps, as well as other stuff we find interesting.

Sunday relaxation: Freakangels.

We both like to read graphics novels, and since it's sunday and time to relax, I would like to share one of my recent favorites with you. Warren Ellis, the brilliant author who brought us Transmetropolitan, as well as a great number of other cool comics, is collaborating with Paul Duffield to create an amazing weekly web comic.

Freakangels (Atom/RSS feed for newsreader junkies) is a post-apocalyptic story with a distinct steam punk flavor. I read the first 12 episodes in one sitting, and am now waiting every week for the next installments. Weeks have seldom seemed so long ;) According to the FAQ, there will be a print version of this comic as well by the end of the year.

Doing all the right things with robots

Diesel Sweeties is fast becoming one of my favorite comic strips. They are hip, funnny and modern, and in addition the author seems to be doing all the right things.

For one, he's creative commons licensed his archive, letting me get up to date with all his old strips on our recent 11 hour plane trip to Tokyo, and now he's making it easy (and in fact encouraging readers to) embed his strips on their blogs. Way to embrace the internet, rather than fight it!

He's also making some totally rad tshirts, so go get some!. I've just ordered the Internet killed your television shirt.

Slides from Yet Another Perl Conference

As some of you might know, iusethis was written in Perl and Catalyst. (If you want more info on that, check out this excellent perlbuzz.com article).

Anyways, last week I was presenting a talk at Yet Another Perl Conference : Europe in Wienna, Austria. The talk was called 'Bag of tricks from iusethis.com', and it shows some of the techniques I used when building the backend for this site. I've uploaded the slides to slideshare.net, so you can look at them here:

Consuming appcasts, step one

Some of our more observant app admins might have noticed that we've recently added a new input box to the app add/edit screen:

Now, this doesn't actually do anything yet, but it's going to autoupdate iusethis from Sparkle appcasts Real Soon Now[tm], so please feel free to update your app with the url to your appcast, and once we get it up and running it will Just Work :)

By the way, if you are interested in appcasting, I recommend checking out this blog post from the Appfresh guys on the subject.

Consuming iusethis JSON data with javascript

JSON is short for Javascript Object Notation, and it's a cross-language data representation standard, which also happens to be native javascript. This makes it really easy to process this data on the client side, either as a XMLHTTPRequest, or if you want to use it cross-domain, you can use a callback function and a javascript include node.
